Diatomaceous earth, also known as diatomite, is a naturally occurring sand extracted from the earth. After more than 30 million years, fossilized remains of microscopic aquatic organisms and algae-like plant remains bind to the earth’s surface creating diatoms. Some Diatoms are fresh water based, while others are salt water based. Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is fresh-water based and provides many benefits to humans and pets.
The main element in Diatomaceous Earth is Silica. In fact, 85% of DE is uncrystallized Silica. Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is 100% natural and organic. Silica is an important trace mineral that tendons, blood vessels, cartilage, and bones need. Silica is very common in nature and makes up 26% of the earth’s crust by weight. Diatomaceous Earth is unique due to its high concentration of silica.
You may be familiar with Diatomaceous earth as a bug repellant, research now suggests that it’s a powerful natural tool that can propose a plethora of benefits that cleanses the body from the inside out.
We chose to use Diatomaceous Earth in Comfort Plus as a solution to treatment resistant Gastro Intestinal Issues. Diatomaceous Earth kills parasites, often associated with digestive issues, while absorbing excessive water in the intestinal tract.
However, like most of our ingredients, Diatomaceous Earth has many benefits and include;
1) Kills Intestinal Parasites
It effectively kills all common intestinal parasites by physical means: It is believed that food-grade DE kills intestinal parasites in the following two ways:
• DE particles are extremely sharp and they work on a microscopic level by getting stuck between the joints of the parasite and cutting it into pieces.
• DE also kills parasites and insects by dehydrating them. It scratches the waxy layer of these organisms, which in turn leads to loss of moisture.
It prevents intestinal parasites from coming back. This is important for animals who have been successfully treated, as well as animals who are prone to infections caused by intestinal parasites, can use food-grade DE to prevent intestinal infections.
Besides being effective against intestinal parasites, food-grade DE is also effective against fungal infections of the stomach, such as infection caused by E. coli.
2) Detoxifies the Body
Diatomaceous earth acts as a natural detoxifying agent within our body that kills parasites and viruses that can cause illnesses while also purifying our blood. The reason behind its detoxification capabilities is DE’s silica content.
Diatomaceous Earth contains a high source Silica which is a mineral compound that can neutralize and remove free radical damage from the body through sweat, feces, and urine, resulting in lower oxidative damage and anti-aging effects.
3) Strengthens Bones, Joints, and Ligaments
Silica within DE is beneficial for bone, connective tissue, and preventing low bone mass. It helps with normal metabolism and joint formation while helping with the synthesis of collagen.
